Dull vs. Sharp

A closer look

Have you ever wondered what a dull tool looks like…really close?

We have taken a few pictures of some spiral bits before and after service using a Macro lens on a digital camera. It is clear in most of the “before” photos what a dull tool looks like. It’s the dull grey rounded edge. The comparison is the nice sharp edge after service.

This and That

So many little things have popped up around here that it has come time for us to include a miscellaneous roundup of items from around the saw!

The Value of Sharpening

After almost 40 years of being involved with sharpening tools, the single most important issue that stands out is the expectation of how long a tool will keep running, and when to take it off for service.

It does not matter what kind of tool it is, or what you are cutting/machining – all tools will get dull and stop working effectively and efficiently. There are telltale signs – which are actually quite obvious – like burning, off-square cuts, or even sound changes. Sometimes customers want to talk, rap, shoot the $%^&, or just chat about their business. Usually a good time to learn about the health of their business, their current and future plans, and their general mindset. The odd customer would like to jump through the phone and

The Eavesdropper & The Lock Miter

One of the major disadvantages of being behind the order desk is that, unlike the outside sales staff, your interaction with the customer/product purchased often ends at the point of sale. Of course there are customers who will frequently buy the same item, especially high volume production shops, but for the most part the home hobbyist will come in for a particular router bit and we might not see them again for months (even then it may just be to have the item sharpened). Add to this the fact that unless they have a “unique” personality (you know who you are!),
